Distillation towers are high-vertical cylindrical vessels that contain various internals, flat metal plates called trays or discrete geometric pieces, packing that will enhance the gas and liquid contact to promote the mass-transfer.

Columns can contain up to one-hundred trays for difficult separations. On each tray, liquid is flowing horizontally from one side to the other, falling to the tray below on weirs and downcomers. Gas phase is flowing vertically, passing as bubbles through the liquid phase.
